Carballes Baena Wins Belgrade Marathon Against Monfils
Spanish tennis player Roberto Carballes Baena claimed the second Top 20 victory of his career in a dramatic 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (4) game over Gael Monfils in Wednesday's night marathon reaching the quarterfinals of the Belgrade Open.
Carballes Baena, who won the ATP Challenger Series at the same venue last month, came out on fire against World No. 15 Monfils. He was leading 4-0 in the opening set and with a break in the second, but the Frenchman, looking for his second win of the season (1-3), did not stop fighting until the very end.
What's Next For Baena?
Carballes Baena has booked a quarterfinal match against eighth seed Federico Delbonis, coming up for his second title at the tour level. The Spaniard will be looking to improve his ATP Head2Head record against Delbonis, who won all four of their meetings, including most recently in Marbella at the start of the season.
Fifth seed Dusan Lajovic took his only win in a row of the day, passing Jeremy Chardy to book a spot in the quarterfinals. The Serbian got 72 percent of points (28/39) after his first serve and continued to pressure the Frenchman, creating 18 break opportunities. Lajovic moved into the game four times en route to a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Lajovic will face qualifying Andrei Martin, who also met 18 breakpoints in his battle with third seed Nikoloz Basilashvili. Martin saved 10 of those points and, in turn, broke the serve nine times to claim a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (4) win over the Munich champion after two hours and 29 minutes.
